Who stole our summer, because we want it back!
Weather wise this summer past must have been the worst on record for many a year, with a number of provinces receiving record rainfalls for some 30 plus years for the months of December and January. We even lost February with snow on the mountain and half of March with a storm reaching some 100km per hour winds. Many made the most of the situation during the Xmas break though, commenting that they had become very knowledgeable by reading 3 different newspapers every day front to back and spent more time getting to know their neighbours better.
The March storm affected the area quite badly with many trees down, roofs blown off and power pylons bent. The winds were easterly which seem to cause more damage for some reason although no lakefront erosion. For Motutere on the Lakeside the power shed was completely demolished and the roof was picked up somewhere near Turangi! A Kowhai tree fell over towards the lake with no damage to anything and a caravan awning was wind damaged. On the eastern side we had a couple of awnings blown over and a tree trunk from the neighbouring property fall on to a hard awning. After some 22 hours without power we had a 350kva generator installed on the eastern side which stopped every 3 hours due to a blocked fuel filter and a day later had a 130 kva generator delivered for the lakeside. The storm hit us just after midnight on Monday and we had full power back on by Friday.
Wayne and Judy, after nearly 7 years at Motutere are retiring after Easter. They are not moving too far away to Motuoapa and we wish them well and all the best for their retirement years. Ross and Julie Hewitt will be assisting us with the operations at the Holiday Park and we welcome them on board. Many of you already will know them, and Ross has been working part time cleaning over the last 3 years here and Julie was in the shop/office over Xmas so they are well acquainted with the running side of things. Ross and Julie have also had a caravan here on site for as long as we have been here and are quite passionate about Motutere.
Wayne Harrison on site 113 is a semi retired builder who also did his time as a coachbuilder, including building caravans. Over the last 12 months Wayne has undertaken maintenance and repair work to a number of caravans here at Motutere. The rates are very reasonable and with no travelling costs this keeps the overall cost down. So if you require assistance see Wayne on site or ph. 022 0174 294.
Malcolm is importing German manufactured caravans from England and has them on display at Motutere. They are late models (2004-2007), well constructed, well appointed and most importantly priced right, around 8 -10k below equivalent replacement.
Diary note Queens’ Birthday weekend for the annual fishing competition at Motutere. If anyone has suggestions / recommendations for entertainment please let us know asap. Time to look in ‘The Trunk’ for those well placed gifts that could be used for prizegiving. All sponsorship greatly appreciated. See u there.
This year we will be re-numbering the sites to have better conformity and to get rid of sites that have a’s, b’s, & c’s. It will be a huge job but should be finished before Xmas. First up will be the Eastern side of the camp and because of the layout with numbered rows they will also have a row name. The theme being ‘tree names’. Murray Smith has designed a sign in the shape of a Trout that will be mounted on a post around 1.6 to 1.8 high similar to a street sign, that will have both the row name and site nos. on. Hopefully they will be seen a little better and not get run over as often. All power boxes will be repainted and renumbered. This will be a good way for Ross to get to know all the sites intimately!
Yes it is that time of the year again. After Easter the shop/office hours will be changing to winter hours. Generally speaking this will be 8.30am till 11.30am so please pay during this time. This is also the best time to phone us, after that we are usually working around the park, or there is always email. As a site holder you may have a late departure free of charge providing you pay prior to 11am on day of departure.
Welcome to the eleven families that have decided to take an annual site at Motutere this year to date and we hope you enjoy your time here and get to know and make new friends.
Please remember to unplug / switch of your power and turn off the water supply prior to departure from your caravan. If you have family/friends using your caravan it is recommended you have a check list for them to use to make life a little easier for all. The most important point is to ensure the power plug into the power box is pushed all the way in to make a proper and safe connection, otherwise you can burn the pins out on the plugs making them useless.
Don’t forget to periodically check out the webb site and or the link to the Motutere Facebook page.
All the best for 2012Brent, Jenny and the Team
